An academic unit under the Office of the Provost, Georgetown’s Office of Global Education (OGE) has a direct impact on the international character and identity of the university by providing access to academic instruction and exchange around the world. Global education and programs are among the top priorities at Georgetown and significantly impact the University’s reputation and ability to recruit excellent students, professors, and researchers. More than half of the university’s undergraduates participate in education abroad programs at some point during their academic careers.
Job Overview
The Global Education Advisor shares in OGE’s goal to deliver programs and services that promote student development, well-being, and engagement while building an inclusive global community that seeks to address inequities so every student can thrive. They advise students on academically appropriate study abroad opportunities for a portfolio of programs in duties that include but are not limited to:
- Assist students with the application and selection process and act as the liaison with partner institutions in their designated region regarding student support and service
- Serve as a resource for curricular deans regarding academic questions for universities within their region
- Maintain responsibility for program management and fiscal coordination of programs in their region
- Organize recruitment and cross-cultural programming for education abroad programs, communicate with program representatives and partner institutions, and resolve curricular issues in cooperation with students and their academic (or curricular) deans
Work Interactions
Reporting to the Senior Associate Director of Affiliated Programs, the Global Education Advisor develops and maintains a complete knowledge of a portfolio of programs and devotes time to student information sessions, region, country, and program-specific orientations, and outreach events promoting education abroad.
They exhibit empathy and enthusiasm in interactions with students and apply a high level of professionalism to their interactions with all campus and international partners.
Responsibilities
Curricular and Intercultural Advising
- Guides students on the selection of appropriate education abroad programs with regard to academic, intercultural, personal, and professional goals.
- Advises students on the application process and logistics such as housing and visas.
- Reviews and processes student applications, working with the OGE administration team and academic (or curricular) deans on student selection, nomination, and acceptance processes.
- Conducts information sessions and group advising for prospective students on programs in their assigned portfolio.
- Provides support and addresses disciplinary, emotional, or physical issues with students to ensure preparedness to participate.
- Conducts general and region, country, and program-specific orientations.
- Communicates with academic (or curricular) deans and departments (as appropriate) in order to assist students as they coordinate approvals for Georgetown academic credit for their education abroad coursework and facilitate initial steps in the final award of credit transfer.
- Provides comprehensive support services to students abroad including advising and assistance in resolving issues relating to cultural adjustment, housing concerns, academic expectations, program policies, etc.
- Responds to inquiries from parents/families, faculty, and staff on student-related matters.
- Coordinates health and safety support for students while abroad and, under the guidance of OGE leadership, assists with emergency incidents.
- Collaborates with the OGE team and campus partners on reentry advising and programming for returned students.
Program Management, Development, and Evaluation
- Manages education abroad programs in the assigned portfolio including serving as the primary liaison with direct enrollment universities, exchange partners, and program providers on student curricular issues, on-site programming, disciplinary matters, and health and safety issues.
- Participates in the program-specific budgeting process including the development of enrollment and program fee projections, and program and financial aid budgets.
- Administers program-specific support that may include assistance with educational collaboration and affiliation agreements, vendor and personal service contract management, coordination with local legal contacts, and institutional compliance for programs in assigned portfolio.
- Develops and maintains participant materials for application, acceptance, registration, orientation, and evaluation specific to programs in assigned portfolio.
- Coordinates with the OGE administration team on application, registration, and financial program processes.
- Collaborates with OGE leadership on the evaluation of existing programs (including site visits and periodic program reviews) and implements improvements as needed.
- Manages program-specific academic information including suggested grade and credit equivalencies.
- Identifies and advances curricular issues with implications for institutional policies to the attention of the OGE leadership.
- Works toward the development of new programs in regions and/or areas in collaboration with OGE leadership.
Outreach and Promotion
- Works with the OGE team to implement a comprehensive annual plan for education abroad student recruitment.
- Reviews and updates education abroad web pages and program brochures for existing programs in the designated portfolio.
- Develops materials for new programs as they are approved (i.e., curriculum-specific content, program brochures with program-specific information, etc.).
- Participates in OGE outreach and recruitment activities including information sessions, academic class visits, study abroad fairs, and affiliate partner events.
- Participates in Georgetown events promoting global education including prospective student recruitment weekends (GAAP) and parent and family weekend.
Representation and Professional Development
- Represents OGE in on-campus forums as assigned by the Senior Associate Director of Affiliated Programs and the Director of Global Education.
- Represents Georgetown University and OGE’s internationalization efforts in national and international forums.
- Participates in relevant professional development opportunities with the goal of developing new skills and knowledge which will help the office achieve its goals and objectives (funding permitted).
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree – preference for a Master’s degree in international education, higher education administration, or a related field
- 1 to 2 years of relevant experience in student advising and international education program administration or related field, or equivalent combination of experience and preferred education
- Experience studying, working, and/or living abroad
- Ability to thrive and adapt in a demanding team-oriented work environment with changing demands and priorities, while managing a variety of complex and overlapping tasks
- Excellent oral and written skills with demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with a diverse group of students, parents, faculty, and university administrators in order to facilitate a successful education abroad strategy
- Commitment to justice, diversity, equity, and inclusion
- Ability to work as both independently and as a team member in order to meet goals and complete assigned tasks and projects
- Personal initiative, willingness and availability for a flexible work schedule and assignments – including occasional evenings and weekends
- Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously and function in a high volume/high traffic office setting
Preferred qualifications
- Strong intercultural skills and the ability to communicate in one or more foreign languages
- Familiarity with student development, experiential learning, and/or intercultural development theory and practice
- Experience with Terra Dotta or other education abroad application management software
