Primary Purpose of Position

The primary purpose of this 9-month tenure track position is to support graduate (M.S and PhD levels) and undergraduate education and training. The department supports a master’s degree Agriculture and Environmental Health Sciences with a concentration in Integrative Animal Health Systems and has a newly established PhD program in Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, with a concentration in Sustainable Animal Production and Health. Graduate training across other disciplines and majors is strongly encouraged.

The essential duties and responsibilities are to: teach graduate and undergraduate courses, participate in undergraduate and graduate advising, mentoring, and training, and participate in student recruitment and retention activities. The successful candidate is also expected to continue or develop an independent comprehensive research program in animal health that supports the strategic initiatives and goals set forth by the College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences, and the Department of Animal Sciences. Besides responding to the Department, college, and university strategic priorities, the faculty research initiatives are typically in alignment with the priority programs established by the National Institute of Food and Agriculture, The National Science Foundation, The National Institutes of Health, or other relevant funding organization.

Other service-related activities include service on university committees as assigned, service to profession and community, outreach/extension activities, and any other duties and responsibilities assigned by the department chair.

North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University is a premier land grant university producing the largest number of African American graduates in agriculture and second in Animal Sciences. The appointee will have access to a range of animal and infrastructure resources including the laboratory animal resource facility, the farm, and various research laboratories. Through federally and state funded Agricultural Research and Cooperative Extension Programs, the college is positioned to not only conduct research, but also to deliver the research outcomes to all citizens of North Carolina and specifically to resource limited farmers and their communities.

CAES offers 9 BS degrees, 3 MS degrees and 1 PhD and educates over 1100 students. BS degrees include: Agricultural and Environmental Systems, Agricultural Education, Animal Science, Biological Engineering, Child Development and Family Studies, Family and Consumer Sciences, Food and Nutritional Sciences, Laboratory Animal Science and Landscape Architecture. The graduate programs include MS in Agricultural Education, MS in Agricultural and Environmental Systems and MS in Food and Nutritional Sciences, and the new interdisciplinary PhD in Agriculture and Environmental Sciences with 5 concentrations, including an animal science specialization track.

The Department of Animal Sciences is housed in a 64,000 square foot, 2 story facility. It accommodates modern instructional classrooms, teaching laboratories and faculty research laboratories. The first floor includes a 12,000 square foot environmentally controlled laboratory animal resource unit. The Department offers a Bachelor of Science Degrees in Animal Science, Animal Science (Animal Industry concentration), and Laboratory Animal Science and two graduate programs: Master of Science in Agricultural and Environmental Systems, with a concentration in Integrated Animal Health Systems and the soon to be launched Ph.D. in Agricultural and Environmental Systems, Animal Sciences concentration. The department’s instruction and research are supported by excellent beef, poultry, swine, dairy, small ruminants, and equine facilities at the university farm. These extended laboratory opportunities, located as part of the University’s farm complex, help to further enhance research capabilities and practical demonstrations for agricultural teaching, research and extension activities. The Department of Animal Sciences produces the second highest number of African Americans that go on to pursue the D.V.M in the United States. The department also has one the highest student first-year retention rates on campus, displaying the importance placed upon student success..

Minimum Requirements

Ph.D., DVM, DVM/PhD or equivalent degree(s) to be considered for this position (e.g., formal training in food producing (beef) animal physiology, muscle biology, pre-harvest meat science that supports training of graduate (MS and PhD Students and undergraduate pre-veterinary medical students in animal health science).

Preference may be given to applicants with expertise in sustainable animal protein production and improving meat quality. The successful candidate will possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills and a desire to create an environment that promotes learning, collegiality, collaboration. Candidates must possess an appropriate level of teaching and research experiences to be successful in effective didactic instruction and grantsmanship. Experience working with academic institutions, other public external organizations, or relevant private sector entities. The candidate is also expected to possess skills to advocate for the program, college, and university at the state national levels.
